Finance Minister Tendai Biti today said it would be impossible to hold elections before end of July. Forget about the lack of money, he said. “It’s a processing issue which will determine the date of the election. It is not possible to have elections before at least the end of July”. He said the new constitution has to be debated in parliament and could be approved at the earliest by 15 May. Then there would be 30 days of voter registration, followed by voter inspection. Election dates must then be proclaimed, followed – a minimum of two weeks later – by candidate nominations. Elections must be held within 30 days of nominations making late July the earliest date the elections can be held.
