Air Zimbabwe to revive flights to Masvingo and Buffalo Range

Struggling state-owned airline Air Zimbabwe has plans to re-introduce flights to Masvingo and Buffalo Range near Chiredzi, an official has said.

The airline is on the rebound and last year resumed flights to Johannesburg, South Africa and Victoria Falls after a short hiatus caused by viability problems.

“We’re working on re-introducing more domestic routes so that we improve our competitiveness. At the time when our fleet was grounded some few years ago, we also suspended flights to Masvingo and Buffalo Range,” Air Zimbabwe sales and marketing manager, Christopher Kwenda said today.

He did not give a timetable.

He said the airline was re-launching domestic flights as part of its turnaround strategy aimed at improving its market share. The airline was also offering chartered flights, he added.

“We’re very much flexible and this is why we offer chartered flights,” said Kwenda.

Air Zimbabwe has flown to Masvingo and Buffalo Range intermittently in the 1980s and 1990s. Attempts to revive flights in recent times failed due to poor market response.

In August, the airline re-introduced the Harare-Kariba-Victoria Falls route to link two of the country’s major tourist attractions.

According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ), the airports at Masvingo and Buffalo Range can accommodate Air Zimbabwe’s MA60 aircraft or other light and medium aircraft.
