5 die of coronavirus as Zimbabwe relaxes lockdown measures

Five people -three from Manicaland and two from Mashonaland West- died of coronavirus today as President Emmerson Mnangagwa relaxed lockdown restrictions that had been in force for the past eight weeks.

Industry and small and medium enterprises have been allowed to resume operations provided they adhere to World Health Organisation and national covid-19 guidelines.

Inter-city travel is now allowed. Supermarkets can open up to 7pm and the curfew is now from 10pm to 5.30am. Schools should prepare to re-open.

Mnangagwa, however, did not say anything about the re-opening of the country’s borders.

There were 26 new cases ad 239 recoveries resulting in the number of active cases dropping to 1 742.

Zimbabwe now has 36 115 cases, 32 905 recoveries and 1 468 deaths.

Active cases in Harare dropped to 734. In Manicaland they went up to 588 while those in Bulawayo dropped to 74.

Mashonaland West, which was in third place, dropped to 34 cases after 185 people recovered.

Matebeleland North is now in third place with 184 cases.

Some 2 163 people were vaccinated today bringing the total to 21 456.
