128 Zimbabweans recover from coronavirus in one day as number of fully immunized surpasses 100 000

A whopping 128 people, 112 of them from Manicaland, recovered from coronavirus today as the number of those who have now been fully immunised against the pandemic surpassed 100 000.

There were only 34 new cases, quite a high number compared to the past few days, but the number of active cases dropped to below 1 000 to 978.

Manicaland now has only 27 active cases but Harare still has 388, Matebeleland South 285 and Bulawayo 115.

Some 7 821 got their second dose today to raise the number of those fully vaccinated to 107 586, about 1% of the 10 million the country intends to vaccinate to attain herd immunity.

A further 14 440 got their first jab today to bring the total to 452 191.

Cabinet today said that 126 new infections were detected through the school’s surveillance system during the past week.

Among these were 77 additional cases at Sacred Heart Primary School near Esigodini in Matabeleland South, 46 at George Silundika High School in Matabeleland North and 3 at Thornhill High School in the Midlands.

It said that learners who tested positive for COVID-19 should be isolated at their respective schools and should not be taken home.

Cabinet also expressed concern at the upsurge in the use of unauthorised passenger-carrying vehicles that are not affiliated to ZUPCO on the roads.

“Social distancing and other COVID-19 measures are hardly being observed by passengers in these vehicles. In order to curb this development, the Vehicle Inspectorate Department (VID), the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) and the Traffic Safety Council (ZTSC) are enhancing surveillance and enforcement,” Cabinet said.

It also said at restaurants will now be allowed to open up to 9pm but all beer halls, bars, pubs and nightclubs remain closed.

Bottle stores should strictly open for takeaways only.
