10, including veteran journalist, die of coronavirus as second wave hits Zimbabwe

Ten people, nine from Harare, including veteran Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation Journalist Janet Munyaka,  and one from Bulawayo, died of coronavirus yesterday as the second wave of the deadly pandemic hit Zimbabwe bringing the death toll to 291.

Harare had had no deaths for more than a month but the number of active cases in the city is increasing and now stands at 210. Bulawayo has the highest number ay 565, followed by Matebeleland South with 201 and Mashonaland West with 156.

So far 130 people have died of coronavirus in Harare and 82 in Bulawayo.

There were 70 new cases yesterday, 20 of them returning residents from South Africa.

There were 46 recoveries.

The number of cases to date now stands at 10 617 and that of recoveries at 8 844.

The number of active cases rose to 1 482.

It appears that there was an error in the figures given by the Ministry of Health yesterday as the total number of active cases was 1 468 and not 1 568 as reported.

Globally the number of cases has risen to 66.8 million and the United States could surpass 15 million cases by the end of day today.

Some 1.53 million have died, 46.2 million have recovered but the number of active cases has risen to 19.1 million.
